Yin and YangThe Chinese believe that there are two opposing yet complementary forces that shape the universe and all things in it. These two forces or energies are related to as Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang together form a balanced whole referred to as TAO (pronounced "dow"). The Tao – also known as "the way" – is the concept of heaven and earth in harmony. Good FS requires balance between Yin and Yang. Yang represents the male principle, positive, light, heat, active, heaven, summer, sunshine, solid, strong. Yin represents the female principle, negative, passivity, dark, cold, earth, winter, water, the moon. Yin and Yang constantly interact, initiating change. Summer gives way to winter, in turn summer comes round again, night turns into day, then night follows again. Nothing is ever wholly Yin or Yang, there is always a little Yin in something Yang and vice-versa. In Feng Shui we seek harmony and balance, too much Yin or too much Yang can be negative and destructive. We seek to redress these imbalances. |
